4th generation ipod finally stopped working.
I am utterly incompetent at anything like this but ifixit.com was recommended & I had a small plastic brick and nothing to lose...

...despite being almost blind with fingers as useless as toes, the repair went exactly as shown in the picture guide that I followed.
Mi Consejo
Buy a spudger - the most awkward bit was prising the original battery out and without this little plastic tool I would have been completely flummoxed.
