Only turns on via mains, instant off when unplugged

My friend gave me his 3GS which is a few years old now, he's trying to make it last until the upcoming release but I can't diagnose the issue.

Currently, it'll only turn on when plugged into a mains outlet (Plugging it into my Macbook Pro does nothing.. very confused?). As soon as it is unplugged it will turn off and the screen ghosts pretty badly.

Whilst it's on it shows the "Connect to iTunes" symbol, and if I click the "?" it says the IMEI and ICCID are unknown.. Every few minutes it will reboot. I did put it into DFU mode but kind of useless on a wall outlet.

I've tried replacing the battery but I only had an iPhone 3G battery lying around, I thought it would be ok as they're both 3.7V but it made no difference at all.

Does anyone have any theories, suggestions or tips? They'll be really appreciated!

Regards

Martin Amps , the 3G battery will not work. These are not your old storage batteries anymore. Just like the phones, they are now smart batteries. Each with their own circuitry and their own brains. You will have to start off with the right battery. Make sure that you get the proper battery, since even some of the aftermarket batteries are no good. ifixit may be more expensive, but I know that they stand behind their parts, and would be a definite way to go. Once you have the battery replaced, reevaluate for any further damage. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for your reply! I've ordered a new battery, although I don't think it's the problem... It still doesn't explain the other issues.. The most concerning of which is that it doesn't turn on via a high powered USB port on my early 2011 MBP? If it did, I could read the diagnostics through xcode

Reason for that is that your USB port habitually only supplies around 500mA, whereas your wall charger goes up to 1A. Start with the battery and take it from there. I am not implying that it will totally fix your issues (would not be surprised if it would) but it's the proper start.

To me I think its the Doc connector. If this gets any water damage it turns kind of multicoloured(pink-green) if you replace this i expect it may solve it. If it doesnt then its the battery!! Problem is the battery wont charge so when you plug it out it dies!!

As I said in my answer above "Start with the battery and take it from there. I am not implying that it will totally fix your issues" I prefer to start with a single replacement first, and I pick the easiest way and work my way forward from that point :-)
