Screw stripped on PS3 harddrive, how to YLOD fix?

I bought a ifixit.com YLOD fix kit, and everything went very smoothly until I arrived at removing the harddrive. The blue screw is stripped and I cannot remove the lower metal panel to access the thermal pads without removing the harddrive. I suppose my question is, can I commence with the heating/finishing procedure or will it be pointless/harmful? I've tried various methods of removing a stripped screw, short of drilling, but I feel that could be risky with such a delicate process.

Jeff Krute, you won't get the motherboard out of the chassis. The screw will have to come out to proceed with the YLOD fix. Try to remove the screw with a pair of Vise Grip locking pliers on the head of it. Otherwise you could either try a screw extractor, or drilling it out. Hope this helps, good luck.

I was sort of wishing I could proceed around it without damaging the system, there is ventilation to the motherboard. Is drilling it out risky at all? Its a smaller screw, I've never tried drilling one out before.

Thank you for accepting my answer. You will have to use a small drill, and get in a position that lets you\ maintain a steady hand. Not to much force when holding the drill bit against the screw head. It is not difficult, but requires you to make sure that you keep control of the drill. If you are unsure of the drilling, try the locking pliers. Good Luck.
