Can you explain what your worry is?

Hi Dan theres no worry, I just got a request from a friend who wants to physically disconnect all the onboard microphones on his MacBook. I think he’s just a bit paranoid.

@simon7669791 - Well you can't physical disconnect them as the systems heath monitoring would then bark at you. Apple offers a good hardware security system (SMC) as well as within the OS its self if one uses the User Accounts correctly. Here assuming there is only one person using the system just enable TouchID. Then just look at the menu bar for the Orange Signal dot. If it's lit the microphones are live!

@simon7669791 - Taking the microphone flex off and plugging the mic hole and remounting it is the only way if one wanted to physically prevent the systems mics to be inactive. But a Bluetooth or headphone connected mic is still a risk.

I truly think this is overboard and between the costs of the mod and the lack of workable mic makes this system less resellable lowing it's worth.

Take a look at the Teardown here at this time code you can see the two mic's on their Ribbon cable. Lifting them off the uppercase exposes their orifice which the sound enters. Follow the process from the beginning to this point (minus the battery & trackpad).

He has a mic all set up on his desk and plugs it as and when he needs it, I think he's a bit paranoid to be fair, Still will give it a try following the video and see how i get on..

MacBook Pro models don’t include a hardware switch to disable microphones, but you can physically block them by either:

  • Disconnecting the microphone cable inside (requires opening the MacBook, voids warranty, and isn’t recommended unless you’re experienced).
  • Using a hardware audio blocker (a 3.5mm “mic-blocker” plug that tricks the system into disabling internal mics).

For safer options, you can also disable mic access through System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, though that’s software-based, not physical.

Can't disconnect the cable without SMC complaining!

While the older Unibody and early Retina series had a physical switch set in the headphone jack which cuts the speaker, it doesn't effect the microphone! The newer design uses a simpler single switch and uses a soft switch within the DAC chip. I'm not sure if the Mic's are disabled.
