Is it possible to replace swollen battery?

My MacBook Pro's screen won't close perfectly. Clearly there's a curvature causing a gap. Also I can see the bottom is swollen. This is leading me to believe that the battery is swollen. Could there be any other explanation?

Can I order and replace the battery on my own or should I take it to the Apple Store (which I don't want to as far as possible)?

First off Apple no longer offers service for this model, an independent shop is your better bet if you want someone to do it.

As far as replacing the battery your self that’s very possible! Here’s the guide Reemplazo de la batería en la MacBook Pro 15" con Pantalla de Retina de mediados de 2014 and here’s the needed part MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) Battery

Before you take on the task make sure you have drained the batteries charge so it’s let’s active. You’ll want do the task outside if the battery is blotted, have a bucket of sand nearby and use care work slowly lifting the battery out without damaging it or over stressing it.

i’ve only needed toss the battery into the bucket once of all of the batteries i’ve done.

Great! Sorry but I didn't quite understand the purpose of the bucket. Do I need it only in case of something goes wrong or are you saying that I should toss the battery in the bucket regardless? And then what? Can I recycle the battery later?

Thanks for your answers!

@vineetdixit - A Lithium Battery that looses its outer case can go critical smoking and in some cases ignite. The sand is to contain things in a safe manner until the battery has finally cooled down. Don’t use water as that only makes things worse.
