USB prongs came out of port

The prongs within the USB port have come out of the laptop. I tried to reinsert, but this proved useless as the port is not functioning. Can I replace this port or am I out of luck?

Hi Stephen,

Your laptop has four USB ports, and whether the port is replaceable depends on which port you're talking about. There is one USB 3.1 port on the right side next to the headphone/microphone port, and then on the left side there is another USB 3.1 port and two USB-C ports.

The port on the right side is actually mounted on a separate daughter card that should be fairly straight-forward to replace, but the other three ports are mounted directly on the motherboard and would require soldering to replace. A USB 3.1 port usually isn't too difficult to replace with a soldering iron, but USB-C ports frequently require a hot air station to work on.

It all depends on your level of comfort with board level repairs as to whether you want to tackle replacing any of the left side USB ports.

Let us know exactly which port it is and we'll see if we can provide more information on how to go about repairing it. HP is very good at making service manuals available to the public, which I give them high marks for. In your case here are a couple of documents that would be useful should you decide to tackle this yourself.
