Boot failure after battery replacement (2020 MacBook Pro, 13")

Hi!

I just completed a battery swap on my 13" MacBook Pro, 2020 w/ two thunderbolt ports, following IFixit's tutorial and using a replacement battery from IFixit.

Unfortunately, when I attempt to boot the device, I reach the Apple logo, which stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the boot fails and the screen goes black. This occurs regardless of whether I attempt to boot the device when it is plugged into power or when it is on battery only.

I have attempted the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Reseating the battery data board cable to its connector on the logic board. At this point, I am somewhat confident this is seated correctly, based on visual inspection and that when I plug the device in to power, it flashes the "computer off battery information screen" showing that the battery is at 56% power, which I am hoping means that the device is getting information from the battery).
    1. Here's a photo of the connection:

  1. Potentially useful context - initially after the repair, it showed a 0% battery when flashing the "computer off battery information screen" (for lack of a better term), and had the same boot problem (get to Apple logo, then turn off). When I reseated the batter data connector, it switched to showing the 56% power (noted above), but the boot problem remained.
  2. Reseating the battery power connection, attempting to make sure it is fully contacting.
  3. Resetting the device's SMC, following these instructions from Apple, for a device with a T2 security chip.

Any suggestions as to what could be causing this/steps I can take to troubleshoot?

Thank you!

Hello there,

The problem that can always happen is the new condition of the battery (this has happened many times). The new battery does not work. So good practice for that problem is to connect the new (Chinese) part before gluing it for the first time and check its condition. Now, try to remove the new battery and connecting the older one. If this fails, try changing (even temporarily) the touchPad and its ribbon.

Alternatively, you can remove the new battery and start the computer without - with the power connected. The computer will start if the damage has not occurred before.

Hi Bert - thanks for your help! I attempted to boot with the trackpad disconnected and there was no change, so it's not that.

I then took the machine to a local repair shop for a diagnosis, and they agreed that the battery management board was faulty (i.e., the replacement part was defective).
