If there is lots of carbon on it you know they are burning the oil. Next do a compression test (dry and wet) and let us know what the values are for each cylinder. If they are about the same between wet and dry, you know it's the piston rings. If there is a big difference between the wet and dry test you know it is the valves that are either burned or leaking. Neither one of those things is an easy repair and all of this requires some major work
