Will not power on - but not so simple...

I have just changed out the logic board after the typical graphic card failure on my early 2011 17" MacBook Pro (found what looks like a used board from a company in France, based on the discolouring around the screw holes).

On the first try, the computer started, but the display screen was weird with lines and strange colours, so I opened it up again to clean the display cable connector with isopropyl alcohol.

After this, the computer booted, with totally normal screen colours. But at the log in screen, my password (which I have used for many years) was not accepted. After a few attempts I was asked for the master password, which I entered and which was not accepted either.

I then shut down the machine to go and search for a solution to the login problem.

When I came back, the computer would not start. Magsafe light totally normal green with the battery disconnected, turning amber when the battery is connected.

Tried SMC reset, but nothing, completely dead. Is there anything else to try or is it possible that the new logic board is defective?

See the last comment to the first post. The keyboard ribbon cable was the culprit.

What does the battery checker on the side tell you? How many LED lites lit and if they are blinking.

When you plug in the charger what is the color of the MagSafe cords LED? Green orAmber. When was the battery replaced last? Given the systems age it’s likely time for a fresh one.


Once you are running, using an external display is the image lean on it Vs the internal?

The mag safe is bright green without the battery, turns amber when the battery is on. But the battery should be in good condition. I bought this machine refurbished in Germany only a year ago and haven't used it much.

@lami84201 - With the battery installed and the MagSafe charger connected (amber if I follow you) leave it plugged in a good 8 hours is it still Amber or is it green now? Also at that point in time you check, press the battery checker button again on the side, did any of the tiny LEDs light up and did the stay lit or blink?

Hi Dan, excuse the late reply, I was out traveling yesterday. I have just plugged the computer and will do as you say. When I plug in the charger it is at first green then turns amber like is normal with my other machines (two other 2015 MBPs). Will let you know what happens. I assume this is to individualise if the battery is the culprit?
