Keyboard and trackpad stopped working

The most similar seeming problem I have found on this forum: Really strange trackpad and keyboard problem. MacBook Pro Early 2015

I have a 13" 2015 retina macbook pro and the keyboard and trackpad have mostly stopped working. The power button still works and haptic feedback on the trackpad seems to be working on the login screen even though the pointer will not move.

Initially a reboot would be enough to bring everything back completely. When that stopped working I wound up moving on to smc and nvram reset with an external keyboard to get them back. Finally I haved moved on to opening the laptop, physically disconnecting and reconnecting the trackpad cable to get them back.

I purchased a replacement trackpad cable from ifixit but once installed the trackpad and keyboard never come back to life. So I ended up reinstalling the original cable.

If I boot into linux there do not seem to be any issues with either the trackpad or keyboard.

The battery is overdue for a replacement, but there is no obvious swelling applying pressure to the trackpad cable.

At one point I ran the apple diagnostic tool and the report said "no issues found: reference code ADP000"

Previously there was some liquid damage on the opposite side of the machine (display side) and I have since replaced the logic board. My worry is that there is also liquid damage on the actual keyboard or trackpad but I am not sure it would be worth trying to fix at my skill/knowledge level. Also I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that everything still seems to work on linux.

Anything else I should try or take a look at?

Thanks!

Liquid spills don’t always stay where you expect them to! I’m suspecting you’ve got damage within the upper cases keyboard circuitry. Which is interfering with the internal USB data pathways the keyboard and trackpad share.

So… either replace the keyboard which is a pain, or better yet just bite the bullet replacing the uppercase. Review this guide Reemplazo de la carcasa superior del MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2015
