Can I just transfer my old 3rd party SSD?

I have this drive in my Steam Deck, is the seating for the new one identical enough to be able to transfer it over? I see that it's in a different place, but it looks like there's something above it now.

The drive is slightly raised because of a logo, only a mm or so.

Hey there,

It's hard to tell if the storage is compatible simply because the device won't be available until a week from now, and we haven't seen many teardowns of the new one. However, it would surprise me if you couldn't swap out the SSD, given Valve's commitment to providing replacement parts and their previous collaboration with iFixit. Currently, the worst-case scenario is that you transfer the data from your 3rd party storage to the OLED's storage. Still, fingers crossed that the storage drives have similar specs and are compatible with one another.

I agree with this - I can't think of a single way they could have made it so you won't be able to migrate your SSD, physically. If the OG Deck used a double-sides SSD and OLED used single then that'd be an issue, but the OG used single, so even if this uses double (which I'm sure it won't) the singles would still fit. Only reason I'm not giving Balázs Triszka's answer a +1 yet is we don't know for 100% sure yet.

Short version: Yes you can.

Long version: Yes you can transfer the storage over. However it's not guaranteed to work completely due to missing drivers. I expect Valve to integrate the needed drivers to the current SteamOS upon the release of the new version. It doesn't make sense to have two different SteamOSes. So I expect the need to update the the latest SteamOS then transfer it over and it will work just fine, as it should.

Update: Today they pushed the oled changes to the common repository. So after updating to the latest SteamOS you will be able to move your SSD to the OLED Deck.

It's plausible that the software update for the OG might not come the same day the OLED releases, so it might not be possible to upgrade it to make it compatible straight away.

Is it normally possible to move an SD from one Deck to another, or does it do some sort of security check or something? When I upgraded my SSD I cloned it from my previous one, but the new one refused to recognize it and I had to reformat. Could be something I did wrong in the cloning though.

Worst case you'd have to reformat and re-download all your games.

@mazz0 Likely something went wrong during the cloning process as I moved my drive from my OG Deck to an OLED and it worked without issue.

I just put it in and it updated. No issues at all. Even put the oled drive into the LCD version and it did the same.

I received my OLED model today and prior to to moving my 2TB drive from my original model over I made sure the OS was fully up to date. I opened up my old Deck, moved the drive over to the OLED Deck and everything is working perfectly.

My iFixit kit got some usage recently because I had JUST installed my 2TB drive in my original Deck less than a day before they announced the OLED model.

Hi, Did you have to remove what is stuck to the back of the plate to access the SSD. Or did you just unscrew the plate, lift and work around it with it still attached? Getting mine today and want to upgrade. Thanks.

@danielcowmeadow I gently removed the black ribbon cable and then there was little black bit of tape holding another cable which I removed as well and then reapplied them after. I had thought about trying to work around them but was worried about bending the plate or damaging the cables trying to work around it.
