Colour distortion when open more than 40 degrees.

My Macbook suddenly started distorting the display colours when the clamshell is opened to more than 40 degrees. There is no other distortion notable with the display- no black spots no lines. When the clamshell is opened less than 40 degrees the display is completely normal.

I sent it for an assessment at a registered apple service centre and they have reported that there is distortion and discoloration on the internal display. I am not sure I understand this.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

Here is the full comment from them:

FAULT DESCRIPTION :

DISTORTED & DISCOLORATION ON INTERNAL DISPLAY

DEVICE FAILING DISPLAY & SENSORS IN DISCRETE GRAPHICS MODE & TRACKPAD ON DIAGNOSTICS DEVICE GIVES OUT EXTERNAL DISPLAY

CORROSION SPOT ON LOGIC BOARD

DISPLAY, LOGIC BOARD & TRACKPAD FAULTY

They want to replace the display as well as the logic board and touch ID board.

Basically costing the price of a new Macbook pro.

Any help will be appreciated.

A lot of Apple gobbledygook!

Simple stated the LCD to T-CON board flex ribbon cable connections have degraded or damaged. Apple had quite a few failures in this series, they never explained the root cause of the defect and most failed quickly during the warranty period. We suspect the issue is the ribbon cables solder joints at either end.

Unless you don’t have AppleCare it will be costly as you need a new display! MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Mid 2018-Mid 2019) Display Assembly

Thanks for the reply. I am guessing by your answer that there isnt an easy or cheap way to just fix the cable solder issue? I am a complete novice when it comes to computers but it seems an awful waste to have to replace the whole display simply because of faulty soldering of the cable?

@ilanavn - Opening a raw egg without breaking the shell is easier!

Sorry I tried a few times and was unable to.
