Why is my MacBook Pro keyboard and trackpad not working?

my macbook has done this before, and i tried every key combination i could find and it never fixed it. it worked with an external keyboard and mouse so i just used that, and all the sudden one day my cat was sitting on the keyboard and it started working. that was about 2 months ago, and it stopped working this morning. it worked yesterday when i closed it and this morning just wouldn’t work. like last time, nothing i’ve found will fix it. could it be a loose cable or what?

I think you gave us a few clues on what has happened!

Your cat seeks a warm place to hang out and cats (as well as dogs) gravitate to objects that have your scent! I’m sure you’ve found you cat sleeping on your pillow and often snuggles up with you in bed.

So with that, we can see your cat sitting on your laptop, cats often mark their spaces did your cat mark your laptop?

So that spill leaks into the keyboard corroding the electric pathways which can be sporadic! Some times working and other times not!

Sadly this is not an easy fix, while it can be replaced on its own it’s not for the faint of heart! And in the end much harder than it needed to be, thanks to Apple’s bad engineering! Even I don’t do it any more as it requires a lot of physical effort and cut up hands! I just replace the full upper case assembly MacBook Pro 13" (A2289, A2338, 2020) Upper Case Assembly as often the battery needs replacing as well.

i don’t believe the problem is any sort of liquid damage as all my cats are female and spayed at a young age with no history of spraying or marking at all, otherwise i’d say it’s a possibility

@liasun - Well that’s still likely! A spade cat doesn’t remove the scent glads which it part of the urinary track. If it wasn’t your cat then did you have a spill of a drink?
