Can I replace the stand by going through the front screen?

I need to replace the stand on my iMac and I cannot seem to get it to unlock or release by using the "plastic card techniques" shown on the web. I've been advised by a MAC repair shop that my models' leg/stand cannot be removed without going through the front of the machine. NOTE: I rehearsed the "Plastic card" technique a few months ago while preparing to attach a Vesa mount and the stand released for me and exposed the mounting screws for me. I did not actually remove the screws because I was waiting for the shipment of parts (slow-boat situation). I put the stand back into the factory position and now I cannot repeat the procedure! It seems to have been a one-time process, does anyone know?

Hi, I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble removing the stand from your iMac. According to the video results from my search, you should be able to remove the stand by using a plastic card to release the latch inside the stand, then pushing the stand down to lock it and expose the screws, and then unscrewing the screws with a TORX tool. You can watch these videos for more details:

However, if this method does not work for you, you may have to go through the front screen to access the stand. This is a more complicated and risky procedure that involves removing the display assembly, disconnecting various cables, and removing the logic board. You can find a detailed guide on how to do this on this website, but I would recommend that you seek professional help if you are not confident or experienced in doing this yourself.

I hope this helps you solve your problem. If you have any other questions, please let me know. 😊

I really appreciate your feedback and, as I stated, I previously succeeded with using the technique shown in your links. I've also had two others try to repeat the "card" process, to no avail. I am preparing to "go in" through the display assembly, and yes, this will be my first level 5 or greater difficulty procedure of disassembly, repair, and reassembly! I will try to capture my work on video, for all the right reasons, and posterity or for trouble shooting any mistakes I don't see. Wish me luck! :)
