Will MBP still work if Touch Bar is disconnected?

My MBP's Touch Bar started doing the blinking/flashing thing about 17 months ago. It got to the point where sometimes it would even stay off. I remapped the most essential functions to the physical keyboard, so not having a working Touch Bar didn't bother me too much. However, putting the MBP to sleep when the Touch Bar was off would cause the MBP to crash upon wake, at which point the Touch Bar would be on again. Strangely enough, restarting or shutting down did not do this - the Touch Bar stayed off. So I managed to keep the Touch Bar off for over a year by never putting my MBP to sleep - it was either on, or shut down.

Eventually, after a little over a year, the MBP randomly restarted itself in the middle of a sesson, and the Touch Bar turned on again. It worked fine for about 5 weeks, but now it's blinking/flashing again, and rapidly getting worse. Anyway, to avoid a costly repair, would it be possible just to leave the Touch Bar disconnected from the logic board? Or would it render the MBP unusable? Or maybe I can just let it blink itself to death, as long and annoying as the process will be?

Good question! Sadly I’m not sure😞 I’ve always replaced them which is a pain!

A good Mac repair person should be able to replace the TouchBar if that is the issue it’s Also possible the issue is the driver logic which is even easier to get to and replace but a bit more expensive a part.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, according to another answer given in this forum, it is not possible to source a Touch Bar for the 2018 MBP, the only repair available is a full upper case replacement. If the repair was just a Touch Bar replacement, I'd probably do it, especially since I don't know if I trust myself to open up the MBP and disconnect the Touch Bar, so I'd probably pay someone even just to do that, if I knew it would work.

Hi

MacBookPro A2141

I had the problem touchbar not working and the System crashes every 180 seconds.

After disconnecting the touchbar from the mainboard the problem was solved but without touchbar.

To identify the right connector use ifixit repair manuals.

Best regards

Björn

The logic board replacement manual shows a cable at Step 24, and a bracket/flex at Step 28. I assume I have to disconnect both? Also, can I skip Steps 15-23 and 25-27? Lastly, did you secure the cables after disconnecting them and/or cover the connectors, like with some kind of tape?
