Phone keeps restarting, panic log provided

My wife is attempting to start using my son's old phone, an SE from 2020. Unfortunately, now that we're trying to use it, it's been restarting about every 3 minutes with a kernel panic. It wasn't doing that before my son switched to his new phone.

Here's a panic log I extracted from the many logs it keeps creating: https://gist.github.com/kenahoo/fe8e30c8... . It mentions userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from thermalmonitord and Missing sensor(s): mic1. I'm not

We brought it to the Genius Bar last week and they replaced the battery, now I'm wondering what to do next. Options would be:

  1. Take it back to the Genius Bar & let them do whatever's next, and pay probably a fair amount more money.
  2. Replace the Lightning Connector Assembly - I looked at iPhone Kernel Panics and it looks like iPhone 8 Lightning Connector Assembly would be the one with mic1. That would be cheap, $30, but not really guaranteed to fix the problem
  3. Go get a new phone.

I'm medium-level competent at doing repairs myself (I've opened & replaced stuff in my family's various iPhones before), but not awesome.

I guess one more option would be to try a DFU restore, but I did already do that once (and then restored from backup - possibly reintroducing any software problem it might have had??).

Which option do people recommend I try next? I would go to #2 right away, but:

  • This very similar question on the forum suggests that it's likely to instead be a logic board problem, and I think I don't have the micro-soldering skills to tackle that.
  • I'm not super confident that I'll get it back to its original waterproofness after the repair, but that might not be a huge deal, my wife doesn't tend to drop things in water...

It might help to know whether the panic log is definitively saying it's a hardware problem, or whether it might actually still be software?

Thanks a ton.

hello kenahoo,

Kernel Panic indicates a problem with the link to the control item in the DOCK charging tape. Of course, as in many other opinions, it is not about the microphone (the term MIC1 or MIC2 does not refer to the microphone). This model, apart from being a really good phone, has several disadvantages. One of them is the tendency to micro-cracks in the construction narrowing. You have two possible damage here: a cracked motherboard, as a result of a fall, or damage to the DOCK ribbon assembly. To prove this, read the parameters of the appropriate communication port to which the tape is connected with a multimeter. Another way, more mechanical, is to connect a working - absolutely original (which is extremely important) charging tape. You can only buy a used, disassembled one. Apple does not sell components other than batteries, screens and some cases of main cameras. Unfortunately, this is where the stairs begin!

Still not many repair shops have the necessary knowledge to repair Apple products. In many cases, repair attempts end up with irreparable damage to the phone. The reality of repairing a broken iPhone is a jungle in many cases. My advice: find a good repair shop and order diagnostic activities in the direction of "panic missing mic.1 sense" A well-educated technician will know what to do and will check it in 15-20 minutes. The other one will talk about changing the battery, screen and other stupid things. You also have an alternative. Find on the web and buy a used, original (from disassembly) charging port tape and connect it to your board. The phone will probably stop rebooting. If not, it may mean that the new tape is damaged or there is another possible problem mentioned above. That's why I suggest the first solution.

A few tricks and solutions you can find on my blog, an address find in "about me" tab (a link here is not allowed)
