a key no longer works: Possible damage from previous water spill

My laptop is actually a ZenBook UX434IQ_UM433IQ but I couldn't find that option here.

My 'a' key randomly stopped working yesterday. Nothing out of the ordinary happened between me shutting it down the night before and firing up the laptop the next day.

However, I did spill water over my laptop around a month ago and am now in a more humid climate.

I have tried cleaning beneath the key (which is definitely the issue, I ran driver tests and was able to check using v USB keyboard.

I have spoken to two technicians and would love another opinion. One told me it would be ~£180 to replace and probably wouldn't ever quite be the same. another said could get away with just changing the key (£35). That doesn't seem quite right to me.

If you have insight on this, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks in advance.

Depends on what the second technician means by just the key. But I am skeptical this would resolve anything. Unless this technician is going to literally solder a new key onto the PCB. In my experience, only one key not working out of the blue is either, some weird keyboard layout setting or the whole keyboard needs to go.

I would think replace the keyboard altogether is the way to go. But first technician might be right if they are replacing just the keyboard. Many times keyboards are built into the top case (top cover, palm rest, whatever you want to call it) and are affixed with “Plastic welds” or rivets rather than screws, which means tear out and reinstall action can be a pain if you’re ONLY replacing the keyboard, not the whole top cover.

You could try to understand how is the keyboard assembled on your laptop, starting from disassembly videos for this model [video1] and keyboard replacement instructions for the same family (usually the chassis is similar) [video1 video2 video3]. Then you could evaluate if the keyboard is "soldered" with plastic joints or just screwed to the palmrest. Based on this, decide if you want to replace just the keyboard or the whole palmrest/keyboard assembly (and transfer the touchpad).

Just to have an idea of the prices, you could check on eBay for palmrests and keyboards. If you decide to purchase replacement parts, also check for other resellers and contact the manufacturer, they may also sell parts to individuals.
