A2338 MacBook Pro Trackpad/Keyboard/Battery Failure.

my cat knocked a drink onto my mac causing the trackpad to stop working. In the process of repairing the damage, I also damaged the battery ribbon cable port.

I bought a new battery online along side, a new ribbon, cable and new trackpad, but I’m pretty sure ifixit sent me the wrong battery. Can someone verify this for me?

included photos I was sent via email versus what I was actually sent. I also included pictures of the damage that I was talking about.

My keyboard has stopped working since i’ve installed said battery.

@danj see attached. let me know if you need a visual of anything else. I’m just not sure what I did wrong.

Update (05/22/23)

@danj First off, thank you for taking time out of what i’m sure is a very busy day to help me with this. My academic career is on here and it’s been very difficult to find someone who’s willing to work 1:1 to fix this.

This is 1a of battery cable

This is 1b of battery cable

This is both OEM and iFixit trackpad

Block Image

This is the OEM trackpad up close. If this might be salvageable, i’d appreciate it.

Block Image

This is the other side of the trackpad cable ifixit sent to me.

Block Image

This is the mobo trackpad port

Block Image

This is the battery cable fully connected

I try to be as detailed as I can with photos, so please let me know if I missed anything.

Your image of the part implies this part MacBook Pro 13" (A2159, A2289, A2338) Battery which is the correct battery for this system.

The parts A2171 identifier is the batteries not the system is that the confusion?

@xoblueberries - I see the battery cable connector latch is present. But where’s the cable that needs to be inserted?

The trackpad cable appears to be inserted I can’t tell if it’s fully and squarely installed.

- de

Also, does not boot without a jumpstart from charger.

@danj i would upload a video, but nothing is responsive other than the touch bar. I’ve attempted a couple of time now and am

not sure what to do now.

- de

@xoblueberries - No need of a video, just run the onboard diagnostics as I outlined in my Answer update.

To fix your system you will need to get a replacement logic board connector to borrow the latch piece as yours jumped off. If you look around your desk and floor I’m sure you’ll find it as they don’t jump that far.

I’ll need to dig out the source for the connector I had gotten it from before.

You will also need a new trackpad ribbon cable as this one is damaged!

Update (05/22/23)

@xoblueberries - I think you are over driving the cables aspect here.

While the trackpad and its cable was needed, we don’t know if that is the only thing that got effected by the spill. To add to it you also needed to replace the battery.

So let’s first stop focusing on the trackpad as it’s clear you needed to replace it and it’s cable, and it’s clear you’ve already replaced the battery at this point.

So they drives to what else got damaged from the cat spill.

I would see if the onboard diagnostics can offer us a clue. With everything put back and plugged in, restart your system and press the D key to enter. Tell us the error messages and code/s so we get a better view on where to look. I would also install this gem of an App CoconutBattery as it will also us to see what’s happing with the battery and it’s changing. snap a snapshot of the apps main window posting it here for us to see.

that logic board photo was from the old battery. I can submit photos of the new battery as well if needed

- de

@xoblueberries - Then the ribbon cable latch is not lost then?

- de

@danj i’m making an answer with photos of the battery/logicboard i got from ifixit alongside the trackpad/cable
