Can't figure out why trackpad is not clicking

The trackpad on my Macbook isn't clicking. It doesn't have the haptic feedback nor the click sound. I've tried:

  • checking that trackpad settings are correct
  • resetting PRAM
  • running diagnostics
  • replace the trackpad with another one I got from ifixit

None of those solutions worked. Now, how likely is it that the trackpad I received from ifixit would be faulty? It was a used one.

What else can I do?

It's unlikely that the trackpad received from iFixit is also faulty. I'd recommend check the screws directly beneath the trackpad in the bottom plate. Make sure the screws there are the correct screws - they should be shorter than the other bottom plate screws and if the incorrect screws are put in that place it could change trackpad functionality. Have you tried using an external mouse? If you are able to click with an external mouse, then the issue is most likely due to how the trackpad is installed or the trackpad cable connection. You may also want to try replacing the trackpad cable if you haven't already. Good luck!

Hi Zachary, thanks for the response. The trackpad used to work so I'm guessing it's not the screws. Yes it works when I use an external trackpad. I can give replacing the cable a try!

Look at your battery to see if it swollen. a swollen battery will press against the trackpad and prevent it from clicking. If so, here's how to replace it:

Thanks for the answer, mayer. Actually I did notice a sort of lump in one of the batteries, so maybe that's the problem!

I thought about this, but to me it seems unlikely because the battery cell does not sit beneath the trackpad in this model. You can see that the battery does not go beneath the trackpad in the attached picture. I suppose that if the battery is very expanded though it could be warping the top case and causing the trackpad to not seat properly. Good luck! https://guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/...

@ben62153. Let's.take a better look at that battery. Please download, run and post your results using Coconut Battery: https://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutb...

Hi! Sorry for the delay. Here's a picture of the swelling: https://photos.app.goo.gl/BypNGuysNg9ibX... It's probably not big enough to push on the trackpad, especially given its location. I've ordered a replacement cable and will see if that makes a difference.

I changed the cable and no luck. I also think I'm hurting some connectors by constantly snapping them on and off. I'm just going to take it to a professional at this point.
