Why does my pill work only while charger is plugged in?

I'm going to start out by assuming you've done the obvious, which includes verifying that both the charger and the micro USB charging cable both work, either by trying different ones or checking that they charge some other device.

After that, you've made sure the charging port is cleaned out with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and there's nothing like dust, dirt or debris filling up the port, right?

With those out of the way, as you've concluded, the battery is the next most likely culprit when a battery-powered device fails to charge. So yes, that is going to be the most likely point of failure and replacing it would make perfect sense.

I don't know of any iFixit-style step-by-step directions available for your Pill, but there are plenty of YouTube videos available. This one seems to be complete and easy to follow.

The batteries themselves don't seem to be hard to find; I'd check Amazon, eBay and AliExpress depending on your timeframe vs. cost tradeoffs. Here's one of the first ones that came up on my cursory search.
