LCD PART NUMBERS: Blowing FaceTime cameras by installing the wrong LCD

  • I have purchased a variety of screens from eBay and AliExpress and many have turned out to be incompatible and BLEW the FaceTime camera and caused other issues.
  • Physically, the LCD panels for USB-C MacBook Pros & MacBook Airs after 2016 all look the same and it's really hard to tell the difference to the naked eye.
  • The panels do have model numbers on them, but I have yet to find a compatibility chart or ANY resource online that tells which computers these part numbers go to.

FOR EXAMPLE:

The panel I just pulled off a A2251 MacBook Pro (EMC 3348) has the model number 820-02008-01, but when I search for it on Google, it's as if it doesn't exist. There's one single result from a Russian website for this model number. I have a panel labeled 820-00452-A, and I'm terrified that if I install it, it will cause problems because it's a different model number

Update (04/20/23)

I also have another panel (820-00452-05) and to make matters even more confusing, it has additional part numbers on the flex cables:

Left flex cable: 821-01228-A-L
Right flex cable: 821-01229-A-R

The image of the display with the film is likely virgin. The seller should be listing it with a condition like TheBookYard does so you know of any imperfections.

Are these new virgin displays? If they are the FaceTime Camera won’t work as it needs the True Tone calibration. A used display being already calibrated will work!

I would leverage TheBookYard parts listing here Mid 2020 13” MacBook Pro with 2 Thunderbolt ports - Displays

They offer a full listing of the part numbers and the assemble IDs.

Update (04/20/23)

@rickcostel - To help clarify the numbers the cables are there own P/N which is not the assembly’s P/N 820-02008- is the assembles P/N and here it is on the part

What do you mean "virgin"? I've been fixing Macs for 12 years and I've never heard the term Virgin Display.

How do you "calibrate" a display?

I saw no mention of 820-02008-01 on TheBookYard.

I can't post pics in comments, see post below

@rickcostel - the source of the display. A new display just rolling off the assembly line is not complete! It needs to be calibrated in Apple Speak. What is really happening is Apple programs the camera with its firmware. They do this to prevent displays going out of the side door as they won’t work! Now to get you going you need to get a used display as that firmware is already installed (EEROM).

As you can see TheBookYard only sells salvaged displays. There are other more established parts houses which is where I would go as I don’t find either Amazon or eBay the best place to find major parts as you just don’t know and in some cases getting credit or money back maybe hard or not as all.

@danj I installed the panel and the camera actually works.

Do you know what the left and right flex cables do?

- de

@rickcostel - The middle is the video, the one which has fatter wires is the displays backlight cable and the other is the FaceTime camera cable.
