RAM upgrade / replacement possibilities

I am rehabbing my Dad's old ~2006 Asus W2P behemoth laptop (Mod: W2PB-7K003C). It officially supports 2GB RAM although Belarc states 4GB maximum. It apparently was shipped with 1GB installed. That is probably the default configuration. It is still running W7 sp1. Someone (probably my Dad's "Computer Guy" who runs a small independent shop) has added a 2GB stick to the RAM slot accessible by removing the small cover on the underside of the laptop. Investigation by various means reveals that the system is recognizing 3GB with 2.75GB "usable", with 1GB in slot 'DIMM0" and 2GB in slot "DIMM1". Clearly, the easily accessible slot is DIMM1 but there is only a single slot bracket on the MoBo as accessed from the underside cover opening. I have an old Dell running W7 that only recognizes 3.75GB of the 4GB installed - so I am aware of that basic limitation in some old systems.

So: is DIMM0 soldered RAM, or is it a bracket that allows a RAM stick to be replaced but is only accessible on the other side of the Motherboard - requiring an extensive dissembly to get to it?

From what I have gleaned: Belarc, CPU-Z, W7 "System" report, etc do not reliably indicate if memory is soldered to MoBo or not, only that the system recognizes RAM installed in different channels. If the maximum total RAM was designed to be 2GB - then it makes sense that the 1GB RAM it shipped with would not need to be accessed - the only possible upgrade would be another 1GB stick in DIMM1 thus prducing the ostensibly optimal dual channel configuration for maximum memory.

I cannot figure out when soldered memory became a common 'thing' with manufacturers. I don't think it was as far back in 2006. Your W2W guide doesn't mention RAM upgrade and none of the pictures clearly show if there is a RAM bracket on both sides of MoBo. I think the W2W is close enough to my W2P for comparison. I cannot find any info on my MoBo, or even any good pics of it, and nearly zero info on the computer itself. I guess bc it is so old and was overshadowed by the "Lamborghini" model Asus released about the same time with similar capabilities.

Yes, it's ooooold, but it's also still working. It's pretty amazing the number of ports, etc - it even has an on-board analog/digital TV tuner with a supplied remote control. But I may just end up using it as an experimental Linux system. Adding 1GB of RAM is so cheap that I might as well add it if it's possible.

This defiantly does not cover all you asked about but Crucial has a tool you can download and it will scan your hardware and bring you back to crucial page and tell you what's compatible. Also you can manually put in the info and this is what I found:

You have maxed out officially available RAM in your system, but if it can support 4 gigs you have single channel memory, but I could not find the DDR type or if its soldered but you can get storage upgrades, and of you do that you can take a look at the RAM situation then, you can see compatible storage options here:

Also maybe consider is it better to just replace the laptop, whatever you do I hope you can get it up and running

The laptop is actually running - but with its limited RAM and W7 well beyond EOL, it is developing increasing difficulties viewing webpages - with all the auto-play advertisements and other complexities. I had already consulted the Crucial memory upgrade compatibility tool - so I know Crucial thinks max RAM is 2GB (1GB x 2banks), but I still hesitate to try 2GB x 2banks bc I cannot see two distinct RAM brackets on the MoBo and I am not thrilled at completely dissembling the laptop enough to see the topside of the MoBo. Official reviews / literature of the W2P state 2GB max. I'm pretty confident that it can take 4GB as it is recognizing the 3GB currently installed: 1GB factory + 2GB added later and easily acessed from underneath. I was hoping to find out if anyone definitively knows if I can physically replace the factory 1GB in the DIMM0 position - as in: is the DIMM0 that holds the factory 1GB module soldered in place or is it removeable? Again, there are no pics of MoBo or ASUS support to be found. I was hoping the authors who did the W2W tutorials would know as they almost removed the MoBo during their maneuvers and so may have noticed.

The whole exercise is simply for fun / experience / learning to help maintain other set-ups I'm "responsible" for in my extended family. I know this particular laptop is a dinosaur - but hey - it still runs. I have an ancient Dell laptop w W7 that is the only set-up I have that can run Toyota Techstream (TIS) and interface with my 3 Toyotas. So there are occasional uses for an outdated system.

@khmiller nothing wrong with old. Some of the people answering question on here, are old :-)

The top memory will be soldered. there hus t is not enough room to fit slotted memory. If you have it apart, post some pictures of the motherboard (both sides) with your question. We can then point out the memory IC's

Besides increasing your RAM I would replace the HDD with an SSD Asus W2W-A1 Hard Drive Replacement (different model, same idea) You'll be amazed by how quick the "beast" will load :-)

Keep that laptop going and save your hard earned money.
