Is it possible to use the Pixel 7 Pro display on the Pixel 6 Pro?

I recently broke the screen on my Pixel 6 Pro, however the replacement is out of stock.

The Pixel 7 Pro Display seems to have the exact same dimensions as the Pixel 6 Pro display and the specs only seem to differ for the maximum brightness.

The question is therefore if it is possible to just use the newer and slightly better version of what seems to be mostly the same display as a replacement for the broken one or if i am mistaken about the dimensions, a different connector is used or the difference in power usage makes the swap impossible.

The fingerprint sensor should also be taken into account. Again it seems to be the same one but i could be mistaken about that as well.

Had you a chance to try?

Was this ever solved? The OEM replacement screens for the 7 pro are much cheaper than those of the 6 pro and I found several original minimally defective screen parts for 7 pro which cost less than those of 6 pro...

All that remains is to know whether the 7 pro screen can physically be attached to a 6 pro frame and if the screen connectors are compatible....

You can try but they are a different size. Probably different connections too.

I'm extremely skeptical that this would work. If you look at side-by-side pictures of the back side of the display, pretty much everything is in a slightly different position on the two screens, including the mounting retainers, the display connector, the fingerprint sensor and the camera mount.

You might try contacting the iFixit Store directly and ask them if they have any idea when they'll be getting the screens back in stock. Email them at support@ifixit.com; I've found them to be pretty good at being responsive.

I actually have to admit, I have been a repair tech for years, since before the iPhone was even invented, and I usually repair iPhones. I recently decided to make the switch, and learn how to fix all phones, because I was turning away so many customers. To make a long story short, I was testing out my skills on a family members "Google Pixel 6 Pro", for a screen replacement. I watched a few videos, and decided it looked easy enough, so I ordered up a Google Pixel 6 Pro screen, which was a little over $350, after shipping and taxes. I repaired the screen, and everything worked perfectly except for the fingerprint sensor. I also want to mention that this was in 12/2023, when an update was just released for Android Version 14. Before I changed the screen, I also updated her phone for her. After the replacement, Like I said the fingerprint sensor didn't function, and there was not yet Google Support for the fingerprint sensor, because the update was too new. It has now been a couple of months....next post

CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS POST.........It is now 2/11/2024. My family member has brought me back her "Google Pixel 6 Pro", since there have been new updates released, and she is now also experiencing issues with sending video emails and messages.

Well low and behold, first MAJOR ISSUE, IT'S A GOOGLE PIXEL 7 PRO!!!!!! Like I said before, there are really only two issues. However, now I am concerned that they won't be able to be resolved, due to the fact that she has the wrong screen on there......I am currently trying to resolve the issues stated, with the Google Pixel 6 Pro screen......TO BE CONTINUED........

Sort of... The two screens are extremely similar and it appears the hardware is technically compatible but the software is not.

I know the because ifixit recently sent me not 1 but 2 pixel 6 pro screens in their pixel 7 pro kits. the screens connect, turns on display, the google logo graphic appears and will actually go into the bootloader but that's it... The OS does not know how to initialize the Pixel 6 Pro's screen.. Likely because its a different resolution or vender etc...

I ordered the original screen on Monday and received the replacement screen on Tuesday with overnight shipping. With the weird issues I was having I assumed the first screen was bad. After contacting iFixit they sent me another screen and I received the 2nd replacement screen this Friday. The second screen is also a Pixel 6 Pro screen. It's the weekend and I am still waiting to hear back from ifixit next week.

I did a short video of the issue: https://youtu.be/PwLwJ0E-DK0?si=RLfeCIQl... not knowing what I had was actually a pixel 6 pro screen.

I did however take my phone to a local ubreakifix which is an authorized google repair center. They had a pixel 7 pro screen in stock and where able to fix my phone. They also confirmed 100% that ifixit sent me the wrong screen in their pixel 7 pro kit. It basically cost me $340 with tax to have the screen replaced last night $299+tax for the screen replacement and $22 to bribe the repair tech, which was my idea, to stay late after they closed and swap the screen on my phone.

To be clear I am not trying to steer people away from buying screen from ifixit. I am sure this was an honest, yet still extremely annoying, mistake. They'll make it right and resolve the issue once they are aware of it. IMHO probably a new guy in the stock room.

But I will be doing another video on this snafu.

Brilliant reply 👏

I had carried on researching into the FPC Btb mainboard connection on the 6 pro & 7 pro.

Last digit difference in the serial numbers for each FPC respectively.

Ebay:

G853-00711-38 fpc 7 pro

G853-00711-35 fpc 6 pro

And official parts:

https://www.nutelsolutions.co.uk/catalog...

Still... if I can get a hold of a beaten up original 7 pro screen to run your test the other way around I will update here.

Thanks for the video review.

@stevenpayn85433 ubreakifix had to send it in to google.. I'm guessing the harvest the fingerprint read or are just making sure they are not just outright selling the screens which they say they are not allowed.

Also the likely show stopper will be the window for the proximity sensor not being in the same place.

I can 100% confirm you can not use a pixel 7 screen on a 6. The radar cutout is different.

Hi Jason! I wouldn't think they would be compatible either. However, I mistakingly put a Google Pixel 6 Pro screen on a Google Pixel 7 Pro. This was in December 2023, when the update was just released as well. The only thing that wouldn't work was the fingerprint sensor, which was a known issue, so I sent the customer (my cousin) on her way, and she came back today, only because she couldn't send video emails or messages any longer. While I was looking into the issue and the new updates, I finally realized that I put on the wrong screen, almost 3 months ago. It has been working, besides the fingerprint sensor, and the proximity issue (it doesn't turn on and off when it's supposed to, as mentioned above), there aren't any other huge issues. So, I guess it is possible. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way, lol. Gotta love technology :) Have a great day!!

Have read reports of pixel pro users deactivating their often over active proximity sensor 😁 in calls and instead taking calls over loudspeaker.

Proximity sensor apparently also involved in the screen facedown-on-surface-deactivating-ring-tone gesture, when you actually want to let the phone ring without hearing it ring, but not take the call or reject it.

I can live with that.... 🙏

Got a $75 screen delivered today, but somehow it was a plain ole original pixel 7 screen 😢 sending it back and searching again for an original 7 pro screen or excellent deal on an original 6 pro screen🤷‍♂️

I recently had that problem, too. I ordered a Pixel 7 Pro screen replacement only to realize it was a 6 Pro replacement. Sadly, I'm stuck with no screen and I'm working to call iFixIt to send in the right one ASAP.

they'll make it right.. Put in a support ticket from a computer that's what I did. They got back to me usually within a day.

I was pretty much in the same boat you where. I had to go out of town and had to take mine to a ubreakifix repair store here in Las Vegas.. I am lucky enough to live in a town big enough to support not one but dozens of authorized Google repair shops creating competition and keeping their prices reasonable.
