LVDS connector replacement with missing pads

I damaged the screen LVDS (video) connector when replacing the drive on my 2017 4K 21.5 iMac. I was able to remove the damaged connector with a soldering iron. I have a new connector ordered from china. Unfortunately, the mounting pads on one side were ripped off . I think those are just for mechanical support but not sure. If anyone knows it would be appreciated.

Hi

Those big side pads only connect to ground and are just there for support

I wouldn’t worry too much about putting them back on,I would put a small amount of superglue at the side of where the pad was to help with giving it some strength

You could also use some really thin solder wick and fill it with loads of solder then carefully scrape back some of the solder mask to make it into a pad(If you need step by step instructions I can give you them but I think the glue is probably the better option)

Hopefully this helps

Any questions please ask

Thanks:-)

Super thanks. This is what I was hoping. May also use a little hot glue for support after everything is working as expected.

@tucsontinkerer

Sounds like a plan!

Just a little precaution:try to keep it away from the front of the connector (board side) just incase it gets inside of it

This applies for when you are soldering the other support pad,try to keep the solder out of it as it can be a pain to get it out and can cause a bad connection for the connector

Please don’t let this put you off the repair though,you have clearly got good soldering skills if you were able to get it off without ripping any of the smaller more important pads:-)

@tucsontinkerer solder the new connector on. After testing it using some silicon sealant (sparingly) to adhere the new connector to the board of the missing anchor points. That way you provide a bit more support to it and hopefully it will never rip off the board.

Thank you! I'll try glueing it where the missing pads are.
