MacBook Air M2 (MBA M2) high noise/ hinge clicks while fully open the

Hi. I have an issue(?) with my MBA M2 hinges.

The right hinge clicks when I fully open or adjust my MacBook lid. This noise can disappear after 2-3 clicks, but when I close the lid and fully open my laptop again the click sound is still here. I am out of returning period, but I still have an international one year warranty. I’ve owned MBP with M1 before and it also had the same problem with the right hinge. I’ve also had a lid replacement on my previous MacBook but the problem returned the next couple days after the repair. Some AASP in my country (Ukraine) said that it was normal, other said that there’s could be an issue with WI-FI antenna.

These two MacBooks have completely different design but the problem is still the same.

Is there any Apple engineers? Could you please explain why it happens exactly with the right hinge? Does Apple fix such an issue? What can I do if the problem returns after the repair over and over?

I also can hear a loud pop noise that sounds like rubber. It comes from the right hinge when I open the lid.

Hi, I came here to say this: I think I finally fixed it. It is the lid angle sensor that is making the noise. Specifically, the flex cable that is adhered to the aluminum case. The sound is from the double-sided tape constantly touching the aluminum case when the hinge mechanism is moving.

In the iFixit screen replacement guide here at step 22, step 26, and 27:

you can clearly see the flex cable adheres to the case, my thinking is that as time went on it will detach sooner or later, so to avoid the sticking noise later on (or in my case, on the day I got my MacBook Air) I just decided to lift up the flex cable so it won't be touching the case anymore, even with the hinge cover back on, there is still a gap between the cable and the aluminum case.

This here should solve this hinge noise once and for all...

Hi

I am not a Apple engineer but I have worked on LOADS of apple devices so hopefully I can answer your question

The best thing here is probably to take the screen assembly out and reseat it as it could be not screwed in properly/out of place causing it to make the pop noise

Apple would probably be VERY reluctant to fix this as they probably wouldn’t try reseating it and if you replace the hinges you need to replace the display as on the newer models the hinges aren’t repairable due to them being part of the display assembly

Here’s a disassembly guide for getting the screen off

As for tools these newer MacBooks have a verity of different hand to come by screws so something like this tool kit would be necessary

Mako Driver Kit - 64 Precision Bits

Hopefully this helps

Any questions please ask

Thanks:-)

is there a problem if it's left unfixed?

@estifanosbireda

I can’t say for sure but it might ware out the rubber piece on the bezel

- de

so all I need to do is go to any repair shop and ask them to screw it properly?

- de

@estifanosbireda

Probably not but you can if you want to

Here’s a guide if you want to do it yourself…you don’t need to take the screen off just loosen the screen and adjust (move back and forward) the screen the tightens the again

Ok, So I take it that what I need to do is to move the screen back and forward with out removing any screws(I saw some video on youtube where the girl fixed this issue while moving the screen to specific direction by pushing it). Thanks so much for the help.

The MacBook Air M2 has been out less than a year so it should be covered under warranty.
