Best power option for GPU on MP3.1

Hi guys,

I want swap my old HD4xxx (2x6pin power from board) for RX560/570/580 (1x8pin). But I am not sure what will be best power option ? All RX 5xx have max 225W what should be OK for board so no need PSU modification.

Power over PCIe is 75W + 1x6pin 150W = 225W - it's on the edge. And Also most of the GPU have 8pin instead 6pin so I need different cable. But instead 6pin->8pin I like to use 2x6pin -> 8pin.

Will this solution (2x6pin to 8pin) take power from both 6pin connectors from board + pcie ? So I don't have to worry about any crashing etc?

Any ideas welcome, but I'd like to avoid modifying the PSU :)

The logic board is not designed to support that much power.

Think of it this way… You plug into a single outlet two large space heaters the current load will cause the outlet and the house wiring to over heat, it might even set the house on fire!

So in your case as you load up your system there is nothing stopping you from going to far.

I would recommend you find 2012 MacPro in the long haul it will be cheaper and you might even get a better system! Or one that can support what you want.

So for 3.1 PSU modification and for 5.1 it will be OK ? And what power option you will recommend for 5.1 ?

@roboscrap - No, that’s not what I’m saying. The 5.1 systems offer more power to the logic board. You don’t need to replace its power supply.

@danj I thought they had the same power source - 960Watts :(

@roboscrap - The point wasn’t the power supply it was the limitations of the logic board.

I was trying not to dig into the weeds as this gets complex! The supplies offer the same wattage it’s how the power from it is distributed within the logic board and the boards copper traces ability to support the load.

Maybe this will help… I have a VW bug great little car but it doesn’t have much pick up. So I take a Chevy 6 engine and mount it into the frame as it’s more than twice the size it sticks out! But now I have a very powerful engine over the air cooled engine this VW had. Sadly, it is so rear heavy the front tires don’t touch the pavement and even when I load up the front with a ton of weight it just can’t steer.

So… The bottom line here is there are limits on what’s possible. All you can do is get as close to the edge as you can and hope that’s enough. Apple did a lot of work in the power services of the logic board to support 12 core Xeon CPU configuration of the 2010/12 systems.

@danj OK I think I understand :) so no RX 580 on 3.1 :(
