Half of my TCL tv screen has gone dim

So here’s the issue. Half of my 43S431 TCL Roku 43” screen has gone noticeably dim. It does this from the intro logo screen and stays like that while watching things. I have checked for software updates, done a factory reset, and even reset it via the little pin button on the back of the tv to no avail. Unfortunately, I am past the warranty period for this device.

Thinking it must be a hardware issue, I opened it up today. But my knowledge is very limited when it comes to boards and capacitors, etc. Can anyone notice anything off with the attached pictures or have any helpful suggestions?

Joshua dim how. Half horizontal or vertical split….makes a difference. It is possible that this is caused by a failed or at least partially failed backlight strip. Check the power supply and measure the voltages on the connector. Let us know what that voltage is

It’s split in half vertically, so the right 1/3rd of the screen fades into darkness. I unfortunately don’t have a device to check/measure the voltage of the connector.

@Joshua did it have a sharp boarder to the sides that did not fade or was it like wavey to the other third? Did it fade into a total black screen?

No sharp border, just a quick fade into dimness. Not completely black, as in you can still see what’s on the screen, but it’s noticeably darker. When I change the brightness, it seems to change with it, but remain much more dim than the left side of the screen.

@Joshua okay that sounds like a bad backlight strip. Time to invest in some hand tools and time to tear it down. The backlights are inside the panel assembly and would require you to disassemble the frame etc. Not terribly complicated just cumbersome. If you have to remove the diffuser sheets et al, mark them so they go back in the same order and direction as they come out.

That’s good to hear that it may be fixable! Are backlight strips universal or is it something I’ll have to order specifically for my TV?
