After starting my macbook it shuts down before switching from the blue/grey screen with the apple logo. I have tried all of the trouble shooting techniques provided on the apple website. Could a bad hard drive cause this or another hardware issue?

Just a shot in the dark, but is the fan running? If the fan goes out on these the system will automatically shut down to prevent damage to the system board.
Also, try booting the system using a cd. If it stays on, then you probably have an OS/X issue and can rule out a bad fan.
