Is there heatsink hold-down pins replacement?

I was wondering I broke one of the heatsink hold-down pins in my mid-2007 Mac mini and I was wondering if I can use a metal screw that’s a 4-40 3/4 screw to replace the plastic pin? Or if not do I need all four or can I just use three pins instead of all four pins?

Es esta una buena pregunta?

Hi

This is a bit of a sticky situation isn’t it!

It is important that you have all 4 as that will apply even pressure to the die of the chip as in even pressure can crack is in half and kill the chip instantly

I would buy a new heatsink to be on the safe side but if that isn’t possible I would use 2 pins that are diagonally on ether corners of the heatsink to apply even pressure (refer to image below)

Block Image

You can use the ones circled if you would like

As for the idea of using a screw: I wouldn’t do that as it would be hard to control the pressure as the heatsink east designed for it

Hopefully this helps

Any questions please ask

Thanks:-)

So but just using two of the corner pins it won’t hurt the cpu. And ones that are circle I broke one that is circle. And will it be alright to use a zip tie to replace the one that’s broken? Or can I use the others two pin on a different corner?

@Jordan Chapman

It shouldn’t hurst the cpu as long as your careful

As for the broken pin,it doesn’t have to be the same ones as in the photo, aslong as they are diagonally opposite it should be fine

I wouldn’t use a zip tie as controlling the pressure would be difficult:-)
