Camera and keyboard backlight not working

Hi! I was cleaning my Macbook and changing thermalpaste. After all I plugged every cable and put all screws in. Unfortunately now camera and keyboard backlight are not working. I think keyboard backlight is related to camera, because auto brightness is not working too. What could possibly go wrong? I think nothing has broke.

Hi

Have you checked all the connections are seated correctly?

this seems quite strange if you haven't damaged anything, try reseating the screen connectors and keyboard connectors

if that doesn't work inspect the connectors on the board and parts for damage(burned pins, torn cable ,caught under screws ...)

if you can't find any damage try cleaning the connectors both part and board with isopropyl alcohol and tips/cotton buds

if the above dent work let me know any we can have a more in-depth look at things

Hopefully this helps

Thanks:-)

Hi @hellomacos I redone everything and nothing has changed :/ Do you know which connector is for the camera and light sensor?

Hi

On the model I believe the camera and light connector part of the screen connector

lets have a closer look

restart your Mac and hold the D key on the keyboard

here's a link on how to do it too:-)

No issues found :/ That's really weird.

System information shows that FaceTime HD Camera is available...

@Kacper Barcik

That’s soo strange!

Let’s try and boot into safe mode

Here’s a link on how to do it

Safe mode will disable the non necessary features and can helps with diagnostics:-)

Have the same problem. Screen replaced. a1990. Chip T2.

Keyboard backlight works until I log in.

I tried to Pram, SMC, macos reinstall. I see that reviving and restoring bridgeos will not help also.

Is there any solution how to disable ambient light sensor & camera by terminal?

I even try to disconnect the internal screen and used a secondary monitor.

Anyway, it shows Serial number: ? and backlit doesn't work

Out of curiosity is your Mac a T2 chip Mac?
I'm noticing that the t2 chip controls the FaceTime camera and ambient light sensor, that being said I wonder if using another Mac, and reviving the T2 BridgeOS firmware would reconnect the hardware to the system? Has anyone tried this?

I'm having the same issue after replacing the screen on a 2019 MacBook Pro. Keyboard backlight works until I log in .... once logged in the keyboard backlight stops working and brightness can't be turned up, as well the FaceTime camera does not work either. I want to try flashing the T2 Firmware but I don't have access to another Mac to do it.

See in the system report below the camera shows under USB BUS T2 Chip. The camera and the ambient light sensor are on the same circuit board in the screen so I'm assuming it's all connected. BUT how do we make the T2 chip BridgeOS recognize it?

Hey! Did you manage to solve the problem? I have the exact same problem and my camera is not recognized in system info. I got a motherboard repair after a capacitor failure by a third party technician who also repasted and cleaned the Mac, so it seems weird that he damaged something while repairing.

No. It appears that maybe the ALS (ambient light sensor) & camera since paired to the T2 chip will have to be reassigned to the T2 chip. Even reviving and restoring bridgeos to the T2 chip with Apple Configurator didn’t work. Apparently Apple themselves has to pair them again but they won’t touch it since the repair was not done by them.

Oh well, no backlit keyboard or camera for now I guess!

Are you sure about that? I searched online and it seems that they're not paired like they are in iPhones, so apparently no need to pair them from apple.

I would definitely check the cable connections. It sounds like there are 2 sets of 5 pin cables which need to be re-connected back in, on opposite sides of the board. You should be able to see the slots, while the cables are tucked under the motherboard. Take the screws out, and gently pry the cables out with pointy tweezers, or just take off the motherboard.

You can see how they do some of it here https://www.thekingrepairs.com/computer-...
