Computer does not recognise iPod

My iPod seems ok without the cover, but as soon as I put the front cover on, I get a folder with question mark on it.

I have the Apple latest version 2.3, manage to listen to music with audio jack plugged in but not covering the unit. What could be wrong ? If it stays like this, I can not sync music, and can not go around.

Paul Gravel, we are talking about 3rd Generation Ipod? Did it work before? What happened to it?

I finally managed to reset it after changing the firewire cable to usb and back to firewire many times. Then I downloaded the version 2.3 and it now works like a charm with my Shure SE 535 earplugs.
