Cosmetic damage on lid, how can I fix it?

During a recent trip I damaged the outer lid on my MacBook Pro. No functionality is lost, but it just hurts me every time I see it.

I've been looking around to see if it can be fixed, but the answer seems seems to be "only if you replace the whole lid" which was going to be €800 ex vat

It's just a piece of aluminium that I want replaced, surely that must be possible somehow?

Thanks!

Willem

I would sure like to take a look at a photo of the damage before I make a recommendation on how to fix it.

Is it cracked? Scuffed? Torn? Dented?

ditto, different fixes for different damages

Ebay is good place to buy your LCD casing. Check for one with bad LCD. It may takes time to find it but you'll save a lot.

You could repair it like a scratch or dent in a car.

You could remove it and see if you can pop a dent out from the inside. There's scratch fillers & bondo... then prime and spray or have a body shop/air brush artist complete that part.

Or, given that wear and tear is normal the old favorite that covers a multitude of defects STICKERS.

Good Luck,

N.

It's anodized aluminum, so a scratch filler wouldn't help remove scuffs where the bare aluminum is showing through. Scratch fillers only work for scratches in the clearcoat layer of automotive paint finishes. Bondo need not apply since it would be exceedingly difficult to replicate the factory finish over bondo. Also, since it's anodized aluminum, a "prime and spray" doesn't really work the same way.

My advice? See if you can find a paint shop nearby that does custom anodizing, and ask if they can refinish the entire panel to be close to stock (it's very hard to 'touch up' an anodized paintjob without it being somewhat noticeable, mostly because of the texture on these unibodies).

Then go and get a Speck Research hardshell cover. It prevents this kind of thing, and if all else fails, it will help cover up blemishes. I have the satin black version, you can't see through it except for the glowing Apple logo (which I have covered by a custom-fit vinyl sticker of the old 7 colors logo. Colors aren't exactly right, but it's a very cool effect behind the satin black shell!).

I have been thinking about this one for a while and I would use Brasso, or Never-dull, or even polishing compound. Use a lot of elbow grease and dress the damage out towards the center of the machine, taking care not to polish or scratch the "Apple" logo.

Feather it back so you do not get a bright spot and you should see that scratch disappear.

Let us know.

Regards,

Frank

Hey, Have you looked at buying a cover for it? It would keep it safe for the future and hide what damage it does have...costs like $50 here in Canada...you should check it out...They look pretty sharp...

You're kidding right? I love the scratches and dents on mine, adds character. Definitely don't try bondo, LOL

Here's what I would do:

gather productions shots of vehicles in Star Wars Episodes 4,5&6

get a piece of metal, practice making it look like what you see in those pictures, ask someone if you are actually pulling the effect off, not your mom either, you need a brutal honest opinion if you want to succeed. Beginners tend to stroke their ego and convince themselves crap is art.

sketch out with pencil on your laptop the pattern you are going to use, with patience and your NEW SKILL you've honed (which truly makes you @&@*^% and cool) , you could make yourself one rough looking laptop that geeks planet wide will envy. You don't find pretty laptops in bladerunner do you? NO, you don't.

Life is an adventure, live it man!

Just don't skip the practice part, and don't kid yourself, get that second opinion, or you may end up with an amateur looking piece of crap.
