No display or backlit keyboard

The backlight seems to work as the screen is dimly lit but black only. The screen flashed on and off (showing the desktop) a few times but now is completely gone. The backlit keys are no longer working anymore either. Not sure if that is related or a light sensor issue since the screen isn’t coming on. Should I look at the display inverter first or start somewhere else? This is my first repairing a MacBook Pro. Only other thing I did was install RAM back when we could. Otherwise my experience is with phones, iMacs and other laptops. Thanks in advance, I appreciate any and all guidance.

@danj - I found my hub, connected the tv as an external and was able to get this to show up. Nothing else on the screen and the onboard screen totally black. The trackpad and keyboard appear to still work as once I located the pointer I could move the curser and use the tab key. I chose to restart and this is what it opened right back up to.

PS if I choose start up disk it takes me to screen and shows the Mac HD but states that it’s an “Encrypted Disk.” The option to reboot in Target Disk Mode is available.

PPS - the backlight on the MBP keyboard does not work either. Not sure if I’ve mentioned that earlier.

Update (03/23/2022)

@jeremyfouse - Oh Boy! You got a double whammy! So we do have a bad internal display which we know about. But we also have a SSD drive/ logic board issue as well!

Basically, your drive is not being seen which is why you are seeing the menu on the external as the systems firmware mini OS is loading and nothing more.

So we’ve proved the CPU and graphics logic (via USB-C port) on the logic board is all good.

Well crap. I was wondering if this wasn’t my problem but everything I was seeing was touch-bar versions and this is the function key version. But in the video on the first link, the function key version is the one he is working on. This actually isn’t mine, its on my desk for a repair to someone I know. I will ask them what they want to do. Thank you, Dan.

@danj I may have a bigger issue here. She won’t light up an exterior monitor and I can’t seem to get her to boot in either safe or recovery mode. Unless she is and I just can’t see it. Any advice? Much appreciated.

@danj no I don’t have one of those. I’ll have to order it. Thanks for the link. I do know the ports are working because it takes a charges and the exterior monitor is getting a signal from the computer but it’s only displaying the same black screen the laptop does.

@jeremyfouse - OK, lets give this a try just after starting your system, shut the lid and use an external keyboard and mouse. Did the external now show an image?

@danj yes I am just now seeing that. So this thing needs a new logic board and a new monitor, right? I got the system password from the owner. When I inputted in into the “encrypted disc” password section, the only option it gave me was to restart. Now it’s totally blank again. I can’t get anything to pull up.

@danj One more quick question. Would leaving the mbp in truck overnight when it was around 0º outside damage the laptop (eg logic board) or was this most likely caused by him letting it ride between the seat and console in the truck?

0℃ is warmer than 0℉ its not something I recommend. And being loose is not good either.
