Sure you can. Just depends on how you want to do the upgrade. Either you can replace the existing 256 GB drive on the board (which would be a blade style proprietary Apple drive that looks like this. This is a third party variant, or you can get an adapter and install a more standard m.2 style drive.

OR. you can install a 1 TB drive where the Hard drive half of the Fusion drive would usually go (if your machine had one) and keep your existing 256 GB drive, just add a secondary one. This would likely require some additional mounting hardware and a the cable to connect the drive to the board, and you would need a 2.5” SATA style SSD.

Either of these is totally feasible. But a bit of work because you will need to take the whole board out either way (You may be able to plug the SATA hard drive cable in without taking the board out, but it requires a lot of fumbling around blindly for the right port.

If you bought a SSD model then your system has the PCIe Blade SSD connector!

Apple offered two versions of the logic board the HDD model which doesn’t have the PCIe blade connector and the needed support logic, or the SSD/Fusion Drive model which does have both the SATA and PCIe connectors able to support the blade SSD only or both!

Here’s the guide Reemplazo del SSD del iMac Intel de 21.5" Retina 4K Display (2017)

I strongly recommend sticking with either another Apple SSD or OWC SSD. I don’t recommend using the fangled adapter with a M.2 SSD! This have had their issues unlike the real Apple unit or a direct plug in SSD which is fully wired unlike the M.2 drives which aren’t
