There are typically foam gaskets around the USB C ports in any Macbook Air or Pro, this one included but HDMI, SD card at essentially just the port flush up with the enclosure so virtually no protection from incoming liquid.

Even the gaskets around the USB C ports, on previous models anyways are not been entirely effective at keeping liquids out of the interior of the computer. I have seen a fair number come across my bench with this liquid damage which clearly came in through the port or the small gap between the bottom case and the rest of the enclosure.

And the contacts within the port are definitely susceptible to corrosion themselves. The number of those USB C boards on previous models I have replaced due to liquid spill is rather large. Even if no liquid made into the machine, the pins on the USB C ports often become corroded either because of direct liquid exposure. Or small amounts pf liquid remaining on the pins when the charger is plugged in later.

Laptop’s in general are not sealed, so dust/debris or water/food can penetrate into the system.

Power/Port connections are not designed to get wet as there is often enough power running through that can short-out or corrode causing damage.

Depending on my travels if I’m on a boat which is expected to encounter rough water I use a laptop pelican case If I’m hiking so the risk is more rain then I use a laptop raincoat! Laptop Rain Covers which I got when I was in the UK as its always so misty and rainy. The one thing you need to be careful is making sure you don’t block the vents otherwise your system can overheat.

And of course a good waterproof backpack or bag to stow the system when not needed. And lastly, not put your system in harms way!
