Why does my mower run for a few minutes then stops

mine did that and it was because the carburetor float valve stuck and leaked gas into the crankcase mixing gas with oil. When the engine ran it overheated because of the thin oil and stopped. I could restart it, but it would not run very long. Fix the carb and put a shutoff valve in the gas line to prevent it in the future.
