Dropped phone now gps wifi cellular reception bad

Yesterday my iPhone XS dropped on the street. It was in a case and had a glass screen protector that took a hit. The phone it self does not have any visible damage.

Since then the GPS, WIFI and cellular reception is/feels bad. It works but it not as good as before. Most notable was the GPS: While driving it was always severeal meters behind or the blue dot was placed next to the street in the field. With wifi and cellullar it is a little bit harder to graps because how looks at the reception when everything works :) but I pretty sure I had full wifi connection in the bathroom that is 3 meters from the wifi router.

I did not open it or anything. I did restart it and despite the bad reception everything seems to be working fine.

So I have two questions:

  • Is there a way to check the reception with an app or something? I know that Apple can do hardware analysis in the store so I could go there and try to get them to check it for me.
  • Does someone already have a idea what is broken and how it could be fixed?

It sounds like you may have broken the connection to the internal antenna(s). I don’t know what the configuration of the antenna is inside this phone but it may use one antenna for both cellular and GPS, or it may have 2 separate antennas. I would ask a phone technician to open it up and check the antenna connections.

I can only speak for my experience with the XS WiFi. My wife dropped her phone also with a Mophie case from 4 feet to ground. She began experiencing very slow speeds when on WiFi. On cellular it is fine. The XS would take forever to auto connect to my home network for both 2.4 and 5g bands. When connected, it would sometimes drop off and reconnect by itself. Very irritating. The WiFi search list would only show a handful of available networks and took forever to refresh list.

Using SpeedTest when connected to my WiFi, the XS was only getting 16Mbps down. My 8+ placed next to the XS was getting 300+Mbps down with my 300Mbps ISP service. Note that both phones were showing 2 bars for WiFi strength. I tried hard reset, turning WiFi on/off, resetting the network settings, iOS updated. Pretty much everything other than fresh install.

I ordered and replaced the WiFi antenna and new case seal for the XS from IFixIt. All screws to the WiFi antenna were secure and no visible damages were apparent. After replacement, I connected to my WiFi network. Connection was immediate and didn’t take forever like before. The available network list populated almost immediately. SpeedTest now shows XS with 325Mbps down vs. 16Mbps before the WiFi antenna replacement.

Hope this helps you with your XS WiFi issues.

I dropped mine one too many times. GPS antenna loses connection from time to time. Then I have to whack the phone face down and it works again. Only a matter of time before it stops working for good. It obviously has a bad contact somewhere. I assume the antenna is loose.
