Mac mini chimes but no video output

Hello all,

This is my very first post on the forum.

I always wanted to have an Apple computer and I like fixing stuff, so I went on Ebay and bought a 2011 Apple Mac Mini that chimes, but won’t post.

Being a Windows guy I struggled to troubleshoot what was wrong but still decided to give it a go.

I reset the SMC and PRAM, as advised with no success.

After this, I opened it up and removed the hard drive, to see if at least would show on the screen the famous folder with the question mark. Nothing showed up.

I changed the RAM, and while changing it, I powered on the Mac mini with no RAM and it gave me that mono beep complaining of no RAM was detected. That’s why I still believe there’s some live in this thing because it can detected if there’s RAM, it chimes and it powers on my keyboard and mouse.

I replaced the PRAM battery (but used one) but still no video output.

At this point I ran out of ideas…

Also, I noticed that as soon as I power it on, the motherboard gets weirdly hot. Not crazy hot, but too hot for something that it’s not under load.

Is there anything else I could try that I am missing?

Thank you very much in advance or your help.

Regards,

John

There are three versions of this system:

Macmini5,1

Macmini5,2

Macmini5,3 - The server version of Macmini5,1

So which one did you get?

Hi Dan,

I think I got the 5,2 one. My CPU is the Intel Core i5 2.5GHz with 4GB of RAM.

Sadly, the Macmini5,2 uses a Radeon HD 6630M GPU which the logic board encounters an issue with one of its tantalum caps similar to the C9560 the MacBook Pro 2010 had. This will take some micro-soldering skills to replace.

Oh no! That is sad news.

Do you know if it's fixable or it's Game Over for me?

I don't have any experience in micro-soldering. I learn a couple things by watching Louis Rossmann repair videos, but that's it.

I quite like repair electronics so not sure if I should give it a try or just sell the Mac Mini again and get rid of it.

Is the entire GPU chip that needs to be replaced or replacing the tantalum cap should do the job?

Thank you.

@joaoramalho - Its repairable! But it's going to take someone with deeper skills to fix it. You'll need to do the math if it's worth fixing.

Think of it this way... An Army medic doesn't have the skills to do brain surgery in the middle of a battle field.

I understand.

Oh well, I guess I’ll get rid of it then.

Seems like it’s not this time that I get an Apple computer yet.

Thanks for all the help Dan.
