MacBook 12" 2015 - Display and battery dead

Hi Guys,

It has been few months now that my battery and my display died on my MacBook.

The display is fully cracked due to falling on the ground and the battery was only running when power adapter was plugged in, the system would turn off instantly as soon as the power adapter was unplugged.

So I was using it as a desktop computer with an official Apple Multi-port dongle adapter (since there is only one USB-C port on these), plugging the HDMI to an external screen and the power to the USB-C port of the adapter.

But now I have a weird thing going on.

The system will only turn on if the power adapter is plugged into the MacBook’s USB-C port directly (it turns on and stays on but can’t see anything as the display is broken), but when I plug the power adapter into the multi-port adapter, it permanently shows the red dead battery signal, as if the multi-port was draining power and won’t let go through enough power to turn it on…

I have to say that i lost my job with pandemic, so replacing battery or screen is impossible for me now but i’d need it to work cause it was a revenue source.

I know i’m asking for the moon :)

Does anyone has an idea of what could be done to use it again as desktop computer ?

Or, at least, is there any tutorial to recover the data from the SSD ? (didn’t find any on the website)

Thanks for your replies :)

Sadly, you have a Catch-22 problem!

You can’t go forward until you fix your system. Let me explain…

  • Without a working display you can’t tell what’s happing. internally as you need to run diagnostics as the dongle for some reason won’t let you run the system via the charger.
  • The costs of repair maybe more than what a replacement system would cost!
  • Likewise you can’t gain access to the system to backup your stuff via TimeMachine.

I’m sorry you are in a tough spot here, there is no easy out.

If you can find another 12” MacBook of the same series (2015) you might be able to swap over the display so you can recover your data off of it and then put back the display onto the working system where you then migrate your stuff over. I’ve seen some working used systems go for $400 USD where a replacement display is $50 more!

Be aware these are not easy systems to service! Review this guide Reemplazo del conjunto del display de Retina MacBook 2015. You’ll also need access to a 5-Watt iPhone charger and a USB-C to USB-A cable.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your reply !

Indeed that's impossible material wise.

The battery had a life cycle of around 1200 before it "broke", so that is the thing, the mac was warning me to replace it.

But my question was, as the Mac would still turn on when the power was plugged directly and not when it is plugged in the Multiport, that there might be a way to get it enough power with the multiport as it is when plugged directly ?

Maybe using a power adapter with more wattage than 30W ? or anything else that could provide enough power ?

Thanks again :)

@Pink Floydish - I wish there was another option, there are none without spending money.

With a dead battery all you did was make the costs to recover the system higher. So now you have to replace the display and battery before we can even figure out what's going on with the system.

Time to find a used system as I suggested so you can salvage your data. At this point I would just transfer the logic board over than trying to move the display and now the battery.
