Single vertical shadow line on A1534, flex cable or display broken?

Hi all, unfortunately my MacBook 12 (A1534) 2015, few weeks ago starts to having the issue shows in the picture, a single vertical shadow line of about 4-5 cm near the center of the screen. The MB never fallen down and never caught a hit.

The line appears sometime, but once it come it doesn’t go away.

After reading many post in different site or forum, I don’t think the problem is a damage lcd panel but a damage or defective flex cable that connect the motherboard to the display.

Any of you guys have the same issue? Any suggestion or resolution?

Thank in advance

Update (02/12/2021)

Hi @danj, thanks for you illuminating reply!!

Yesterday I didn’t thinking to make a simple but revelatory check like duplicates the laptop screen via hdmi on an external display…. I done it this morning and, yes, only the MacBook display had issue…. so your supposed idea was correct, probably my MacBook has a failing display.

I attach a picture taken with iPhone, to show what I reffer to, but after your reply I saw that the picture that I’ve attached yesterday, opened on another device, didn’t show the shadow line.

Now, the new question is, is possible to change the lcd/retina without changing the entire display assembly?

This can be confusing!

The displays used in the older Unibody/Poly systems used LVDS signaling unlike your retina system which uses eDP signaling which is a version of DisplayPort (DP).

A good way of thinking this is like an old analog TV vs the newer digital TV. A bad cable would be like how your TV image can be ghosty and can have bars like the old TV would get as you move the antennas. Now with the newer digital signaling with DP you don’t get any artifacts! It works or it doesn’t!

So getting back to your issue….

I don’t see the defect in your picture as you took a screenshot within your system. You need to take a picture of the display using an external camera (iPhone). But its likely from your description a failing display.

Update (02/13/2021)

The problem is Apple as well as any parts supplier doesn’t offer a RAW LCD panel unlike older Unibody systems the T-CON board is not part of the display is hangs off of it! Why this is important as your issue is not technically the raw LCD panel, its the T-CON !! So your next question is can I treplace it alone? Nope! Just like your fingers are part of your hand you really can’t replace it alone (besides what miracles modern medicine can now do).

Sadly this is the cheapest display I can find 12” MacBook Retina Complete Display - Space Grey, Apple P/N 661-02266 and here’s the guide to put it in Reemplazo del conjunto del display de Retina MacBook 2015

I wound’t get a new display as getting a new M.1 Air would be a smarter direction.
