Why is my power button not working?

Earlier this week a spilt a small amount of water (maybe 50ml) on my MacBook Pro 2019 (with TouchBar). It wouldn't turn on. Took it straight to a guy I know who got it to turn on and everything is now perfect apart from the power button.... It doesn't work. The Touch ID functionality works but I cannot use the button to turn my Mac on and off. For the moment I can wake it up from sleep with the keyboard but I am terrified that the Mac will switch off/run out of charge and I won't be able to get it back on again... What can I do? My MacBook is not under warranty.

Ouch! You are between a rock and a very hard place.

The TouchID button has two parts to it the power switch part and the finger print sensor. Sadly you need a new TouchID button! But replacing the button on your own will kill your system as the TouchID part is tied to the logic board logic.

Sadly you have no choice here you need to go to Apple to have them replace the TouchID button as they have the needed programer (which is not available to anyone outside of selected Apple repair depots.

Do you have AppleCare+ service contract? If you do that will help to take the sting of the repair costs.

Thanks so much! Sounds like I am in a bit of a sticky situation... do you have any idea how much a repair will cost? I don't have AppleCare+ unfortunately... If it is super expensive I was thinking I could sell my Mac for parts and buy a new one - do you think someone will pay good money for it in this state?

The part its self is not difficult to get to or overly expensive alone. The only risk I can see here is if your logic board wetness detection sensors fired off then they could try to push you into replacing the logic board as well.

I would go to a real Apple Store they will do a free assessment giving you an estimate of the costs.

Cool, makes sense - thanks so much for your help!

I cant seem to get a straight answer anywhere. If I replace the power button, can I still turn on the computer, just not use the touch id? Right now I have a 2019 13" with a broken touch ID flex. Would be great to just replace to be able to turn on.

The reason people can’t give you a Black & White answer here is the Button has two functions!

By default the OS install will enable encryption on the drive which ties into the TouchID sensor, and that’s independent of the TouchID function if you hadn’t programmed it.

So, what to do?? 1st backup your stuff if you can. As you didn’t tell us why your button is not working you may need to got to an Apple Store as only the can replace is (really replacing your logic board and button together with a new set). If the blister button it’s self failed a good tech can replace that alone if you look at this example 2016 TouchBar Button back side the copper circle is the blister button as you can see someone with good skills could replace it. But that is not the only issue on why your system won’t start. Without more details you won’t get a firm answer.
