Diagnostic Led1 On, when pressing PowerButton then Led1 OFF

Hello.

My iMac is not always going ON when i press Power Button, works only 20% of the time. The I have to unplug power and plug in again and try..

Diagnostic Led always ON when i plug it in, but when i press Power button then Leed 1 goes OFF and nothing happen. Sometimes when Led1 is ON and i press PowerButton it works normaly.

Powersource was cleaned and PowerOn-Button is working.

Whats the Problem? Logic Board, Power Supply?

Thanks for your help.

I changed the Power Supply with no success. Then I pulled the screen off to see Diagnostic LED’s. I then shorted the Power Button pins (named PWR-BTN) on the logic board to test it. So I know the Power Button is working. PowerSupply is also working.

SOLUTION:

CHANGING MY HDD (already not original) with a new SSD solved the problem.

So the problem was within the Disk Drive with the Boot sectors. I cloned it to the SSD with Disk Utility from iMac.

I have heard of hard drives causing a machine to shut down unexpectedly but you will normally continue to get tickle voltage. Do you still have the new power supply installed or did you put the original back in?

Glad you got it working though!

@memphismac i tried both PowerSupplies.

Now i installed the old one and still no problem. I tried it several times.

So it was 100% the hard disc.

Sounds like a faulty power supply. LED 1 will be on if AC power is connected and if trickle voltage is going to logic board. If it’s off then all signs point to power supply.

couldnt it also be a faulty logic board because it not happens everytime and LED1 is ON when connected to powersupply, only by pressing the PowerButton LED1 DISSAPEAR and goes in error?

I just want to be sure because i dant want to spend 140 for a new powersupply at a imac thats worth 200 and to see then that power supply is not faulty :-)

I changed now the PowerSupply... no succes and spend a lot of money :-( Led 1 is on, only when i press the PowerButton sometimes Led1 goes away and i have to unplug it from AC and plug it in, wait 10sec and try again

Led 1 is ON, only when i press the PowerButton sometimes (7 out of 10) Led1 goes away and i have to unplug it from AC and plug it in, wait 10sec and try again .

When LED1 dissapears after pressing the PowerButton, its not possible to turn on the iMac without unplugging the AC-Source and retry after plugin the AC-Source.

Anything else that can affect the failure?

Same issue.

Replaced PSU unit with a known good one, no result. It really could be anything, from ram to graphics card or a component on the logic board. Not sure I want to diagnose everything, given the low value of these machines today.
