I fiddled with repairing my old 9.7” IPad Pro a while back when the thing no longer would turn on or charge. During the repair I replaced the battery and the screen. I had a hard time getting the battery out and now the new battery is damaged. My question is will the iPad run on a lightning connector only? Or does it require an actually connected battery? Tryin to figure out if I blew the logic board in it or not

To answer your question: yes, a start-up voltage is required to run iPad pro 9.7, via the main power manager (PMU) - colloquially speaking: a battery is required to start the iPad. Powering iPad through the lighting port is one of many option, but other conditions are still required, including connected power through the battery port, in the PMU environment. It sounds confusing to people with little knowledge of iPad repairs, but it's really not difficult. Simply put - knowledge about it is essential. My advice is to take your iPad to a good repair shop. If you can solder microelectronics, ask for a diagnosis. On its basis, you will be able to continue your adventure with iPad repair - which I urge you to do.
