Why does my screen have a vertical stripe?

I just replaced the home button on my iPhone 4. When I put it back together and powered it up, the screen lit up with a vertical bar. The phone looks like it is going through the normal boot process because the vertical bar changes after the Apple symbol would normally go away.

Sound works and so does the touch screen.

I assume that the LCD cable was not connected properly or had debris, but I don't see any. Any advice?

I replaced the screen and it worked perfectly. Looking at the faulty screen, I can see scratch marks on the LCD cable. So let this be a warning: when reconnecting the cables to the front assembly, ensure that the cables come through the metal case cleanly.

I know there were warnings in the step-by-step guides about the cables getting folded, but I don't think they adequately warned of the damage that could be caused.

I take that back. Re-reading the step-by-step, I see that the warning at step 30 was adequate: iPhone 4 Display Assembly Replacement

Mine literally just did that, first time it's happened. I held the lock and main screen button down for ten seconds and then it reset. It turned back on and there are STILL faint lines in the background of my screen.

Luckily I'm going into town tomorrow so we can go to the Apple store and get it sorted, but any suggestions until then? It's extremely annoying :/

Mike, best advice I can give you at this time, and if the screen worked before, is to double check your work. Make sure that all cables and connectors are seated properly and straight. Make sure you check the contacts as well, get a good light and a magnifying glass to take a look at it. Always double and triple check if it is an error that occurred after repair. Good Luck.

oldturkey, I fear that the cable to the LCD was "injured" when I put the phone back together. I have repeatedly checked the cable and reconstructed the phone only to see the same problem. Looking at the LCD cable, I can see that I bent it badly on one of the reconstructions and there are clear scratches on the cable.

I ordered a new screen, which arrives today. If that fixes it, I will take some pictures of the bad LCD cable as a warning for others.

That sounds like a great idea.... Let us know how it is going. Good Luck.

In the iPhone 4 if screen has vertical stripes it's always a faulty screen

In the iPhone 5 majority of the time it's connection not seeded correctly
