Transfer SSD to another MacBook Pro

Is it possible to take the SSD boot drive out from a MacBook Pro 13 inch Early 2011 running Mac High Sierra 10.13.6 and swap it physically into a MacBook Pro 15 inch Mid 2012 and then upgrade to Catalina?

Update (11/04/2020)

Further research looking at how to do the swap on Youtube uncovered the information that the MBP 15” Mid 2012 retina takes an mSATA drive. It’s a smaller mSATA which also requires an adapter.

The just purchased MBP arrives tomorrow or day after. I’ll open it up and look. Assuming that an mSATA is required then I'm interested in finding out if anyone has knowledge of what is best brand of mSATA drive to install. Apparently some do not support being formatted as boot drives. I'm looking for 1Tb or 2Tb.

Hi,

Both macbooks use 2.5” hdd/sad. It's possible to switch them just fine. It might require you to format the drive. Not sure why someone would upgrade to catalina since they removed support for 32bit architecture, well, that's a personal preference I guess.

Frankly, I recommend sticking with Sierra on any SATA based Mac as the newer macOS's APFS is much more chatty than HFS+ which puts SATA based systems at a disadvantage as they don't have as deep a buffer (2 Tx/Rx) as PCIe/NVMe drives. (16/32 per direction).

And I agree with Roman Stick with Hight Sierra if you can.
