Water Damage- No Face ID/Deadspots

Hi yeah so as the title says. My girlfriend got a ridiculously small amount of water on her phone. We were on holiday and it was about 40 degrees so I think this probably melted the waterproofing a little and allowed the water to get in.

Face ID just constantly says ‘Move higher/Lower’ when trying to set up a face and the screen has vertical deadspots on it. Picture attached, excuse the muggy face :D Where there is no pink, it’s unresponsive.

I took it apart, disconnected the screen and cleaned majority of phone is isopropyl but still nothing. I’m going to replace the screen, hopefully this works. Does anyone have any tips of how I could actually fix the old screen and/or Face ID?

Thanks in advance!

Update (09/18/2020)

So I decided to replace the screen as I think it was unrepairable. The issue with Face ID is the flashing red light (dot projector) which can’t be fixed I don’t think so I have no Face ID.

I’m unsure if it worked after the water damage however I have no sound coming through the earpiece speaker. I discovered a small tear where the ribbon cable is soldered on twice. I put electrical tape over the tear as a bit of a hope but it didn’t work. Should I just replace the earpiece assembly entirely or is there something else to try?

Is there any way to get Face ID back or not?

Thanks.

Liquid damage is not a very practical repair as it can never be 100% repaired and there’s a lot of uncertainty that comes with it and that’s why a lot of good reputable shops either won’t offer it or won’t put a warranty on the repairs completed. If the screen was damaged you won’t be able to fix it without thousands of dollars worth of tooling and a lot of experience refurbishing screens. Replacing the screen may repair the FaceID issue because if condensation gets in the lens it can cause problems with it being able to read what’s in front of it.

*Update in regards to your update made on 09/18/2020.

You can try to send it to someone who may be able to replace the flex cable and transfer over the components to a new one that should have a new ear speaker but that can get quite expensive. I would at the very least replace the ear speaker to get that function back but I wouldn’t worry about FaceID as it was a liquid damaged phone. In my eyes it wouldn’t be very good financial decision unless you’ve got some money burning a whole in your pocket or something. If you wanna send it to a specialist to potentially fix it, I would recommend either iPad Rehab, STS Telecom, or Rossman Repair Group. All three have youtube channels you can check out and I’ve taken Rehab’s repair course so I’ve personally met Jessa but I’m not sure if they even offer repairs on biometric verification.

The problem is I think a screen replacement stops the Face ID from working as they have to be paired by Apple. It seems now that only one small portion of the screen on the right side has stopped working now. I understand from what you’re saying that fixing this is essentially not a practical repair to do? Thanks for your response though!

@fimba as a repair shop myself, I can confirm that FaceID is not paired with the original display but there are components attached to the screen that are tied with FaceID but you transfer them to a new display assembly. You will lose TrueTone unless you have a programmer or find a shop that has one.

@hootonberg Ah ok cool, thanks for that. Have you had any luck with actually repairing screens with dead spots before?

- de

@fimba haven't tried. OLED screens are hard to refurb on their own because of how thin and fragile the OLED panel is. I would need thousands of dollars to even attempt at it.

@hootonberg this is not the news I want to hear
