Canister is clean ,so is the filter; but the unit acts strange: works 3 min; then stops- put on charge few minutes; works again 2 min, and stops again- son on so forth. Unit is only 2 years old. Could the battery failing?

If you constantly kept it on the charger while not in use then you most likely wore out the battery. With rechargeable batteries they don’t like to sit without being charged nor do they like to be constantly on charge. They go through a chemical process to produce energy and as time goes on, that chemical process breaks down the cells resulting in loss of capacity.
On the bright side, you can order a replacement battery directly from Dyson’s website. It’s a little pricey but as a cellphone repair shop, parts that are sold on Amazon, eBay, Craigslist, Wish, and AliExpress are a crap shoot.
