I have an Lg42lw550t, when i plug the tv into the mains the red standby light comes on the tv and then goes off,,,,Then When i switch the tv on it clicks and the red standby light comes on but then turns to white which will flash once and stay on, but nothing happens just the white light on the standby stays on, no picture or sound.

@lee05 … being that the standby light comes on and then shows white after power up indicates there is at least some power supply and main board functionality. your problem can lie in a couple different places, to troubleshoot and hone in on the issue start here:
1) with the set on (white light lit) Take a flashlight and put it close to the screen at an angle and press the menu button on the onboard controls and look for any sign of a picture. (take your time and look really close) If there is a picture, it would be safe to say that one or more of your leds are burnt out. will want to replace. if no picture, go to step 2.
2) youll want to start testing voltages on the power supply board. (There is typically a legend of voltages listed on the board itself) youll want to upload a good, clear, as close up as you can picture that shows the entire board in the frame so we can see what you do. (youll need a multimeter for this test and any other tests hereafter) youll want to start with the connector that leads to the main board and test on the power supply side.
if any voltages are off from the legend, unplug the set and disconnect the connector that leads to the main board on the power supply side. recheck your voltages. if the voltages return to normal after disconnecting the main board, then post your findings here. (this may indicate the mainboard as the issue, but need to confirm with your readings posted)
try these and report back with questions and or updates with what you tried and the results.

@jostewcrew I have tried what you suggested with flashlight but unfortunately cant see anything after looking very carefully,
As you have said that it maybe the main board then do you think it would be worth me just purchasing a new main board as i have no way of testing myself as i dont have a multimeter,
Do you sell parts yourself or can you recommend somewhere?

@lee05 ... to be quite honest, without knowing the power supply is holding steady voltages... a new main board may not solve the issue. if you wanna take the chance on replacing to see if it does, ill give a link to a reputable vendor. your model number listed in your post doesnt pull any parts up. please verify the badge on the back of your set and give the complete model number and or version

@lee05 ... this is a uk version and i dont have vendors i know overseas. sorry about that. there is a sticker on your main board. will be eax*******(*). just google this number and it should bring up some local vendors for you. make sure the numbers match.
