Ignition by-pass 1996 Toyota 4 runner - RESOLVED

My 1996 Toyota 4 runner SR-5 (V6) automatic tranny, has an intermittent starting problem. I could spend a fortune to a auto electrician or I could do an ignition by-pass.

I have looked this up on google and I can many, many different answers.

The one which seems the simplest is to run a wire (4 gauge) from the positive stud of the starter solenoid to the positive stud of the battery with a MOMENTARY push button switch in between.

However, I’m not experienced with this kind of thing and I’m worried about further damaging the SUV.

Any advice gratefully appreciated . Particularly as to what MOMENTARY push button switch to buy. The starting system seems to draw 175 amps , so I’ll need a switch that can handle this large amperage

Hello all, I discovered the problem, quite by accident. The 4 runner which I just bought had the alarm system set up to shut off the ignition system. I had been accidentally, pushing the wrong button on the alarm fob. PROBLEM SOLVED ! Big relief.

That is not the way to do it. They don't make a direct starter button that would take that size of wire and carry that many amps. If you don't want to actually find out what is wrong with it. Just buy a start button and hook power to it from run power and then to the start relay. It's set up so you don't melt wires or start a fire. If you want to fix it check for power out of the ignition switch in the start position, it then goes through the neutral/clutch safety switch depending on which transmission you have. Then through the starter relay and then to the starter solenoid which is part of the starter. This is around a 14 gauge wire. My recommendation is to get some wiring schematics and trace the problem. Find a friend who understands electrical work.
