dropped a dumbbell on my phone at the gym DUH!

well, it slipped outa my pocket while doing dumbbell flys and since my headphones were in I didn't note an issue till I let go of the dumbbells about 3" from floor. It was a 50Lb weight that landed squarly on the screen. So here's the deal.... The frame is fine, the shattering of the screen goes straight across the width of the phone so it was evenly spread out. The music stopped at that moment, there is no vibration or sound but the screen was showing the time for awhile (like till evening) I was able to download everything from the phone onto my laptop so the hardware seems okay. I am debating whether to tear it down and replace the front panel (three piece component) since the phone is only 4 months old. ouch!! Wondering if anyone has any insight as to whether there is much hope in saving the phone....

I am a mechanic by trade and work on Land Rovers so electrical messes are not a problem for me, I don't have a diagnostic background on this phone though. Seems a waste to pitch it but it's also a waste to buy the parts etc if one of the symptoms I mentioned is a dead giveaway that it's dead beyond saving. Thanks in advance for any input.

Where did you buy the replacement glass and were you successful in replacing?

If the phone has worked after the hit it should work again.

The screen is gone for sure! The question is what else. You say the phone is 4 moths old and I think it is best to send it to an Apple store to swap it! You will pay a little but you will still be covered afterwards for other defects!

Thanks for the input, being someone who fixes things for a living (when I'm not breaking stuff, that is.....) I couldn't help myself and disassembled the phone last night. BTW... the 5 point "tamper proof" screws are very easily defeated with a very small Phillips (jeweler's size) so I'm not sure I see the value in that tool unless you do this for a living, alas I digress... Anyways, everything appears completely in tact except the face which I ordered and expect tomorrow.... I am cautiously optimistic it will be fine and as penance for my "smooth move" at the gym, I got an arm band pouch for the phone. I'm writing this using my IPhone 3G and am reminded how lame it is compared to the IPhone 4!!

I'll post my success or ***k up in a day or two. Learned lots on the internet about the project ahead of tear down. Who says guys don't read directions?? ;)

I opted for attempting the repair despite the phone looking like it was crushed because the iPhone 5 is supposedly close to release and I'd hate to buy another 4 only to have the 5 come out a month later... Toys...
